Del Monte Sloppy Joe
Yes, we had one of our trash meals. It was that time of year to do sloppy joes again and we decided to try a new brand of sloppy joe sauce. We chose Del Monte Sloppy joe sauce, original flavor. Right on the can it says, ‘Tastes better than Manwich original sauce.” As a refresher. My only experience with home made sloppy joes involves a can of Manwich. I really like it. I think it’s becau
se i really love ketchup and Manwich has a ketchup ee flavor. To cook, I browned some ground chuck and added the can. Ta da! The directions called for pouring off the extra fat and liquid, but I left it in there and just let it simmer longer and cook off. I do the same thing with my meat sauce. I feel like by pouring off the fat and liquid, you lose some good beef flavor. I could be wrong, but there isn’t a whole lot of fat in the ground chuck we get so you don’t end up with a greasy mess. I can handle things being a little greasy though. I actually like it that way. Remember guys, fat is flavor. And that’s the darned truth. It also adds to mouth feel.
So did we like Del Monte over Manwich? Eh. I say nay. And Steve didn’t say nay but he recognized that there may have been a difference. I thought it had a slight southwestern ee flavor and Steve agreed and added that they may have kicked it up a little with chili powder. Now, I haven’t had Manwich so much that I know the flavor exactly. I had a little trouble at first and just thought. Eh, it’s just a regular sloppy joe. (And boy is that name fitting - half of my sandwich fell onto my cheap but recycled and earth friendly paper plate.) When I have Manwich, it makes me happy. But because I don’t have them too often, I can’t say with confidence that it’s the better choice. I’ll give you a more thorough report when I can next time we have it.
I do know that I won’t be buying Del Monte’s original sauce anymore. If the sloppy joe urge hits again, I’m going right back to Manwich. And that’s the scoop guys! Take care and as always, Eat Something Good!
