Cracker Barrel

chikchedbroc2

Steve dragged me to a tea party the other day.  I won’t say anything about it except that I made us leave after a short time.  And I had a really good hot pretzel there with sabrett mustard.  I had already picked up some ground chuck from our local little market (Red Mills market) for spaghetti with meat sauce so I planned on cooking even though I wasn’t really in the mood.  Just as we were passing the exit Steve said loudly and excitedly, Cracker Barrel!  But we missed our exit, our chance.  We discussed it a little further and we realized that we really wanted to go there.  So, that’s what we did.  We turned around at the next exit (and the exits were really far apart on I-84) - and headed to our destination.

We were seated immediately.  We had talked about getting one of their giant breakfasts, but when ordering time came around, we ordered differently.  As we were being seated, the hostess mentioned that they had skillet bakes or something like that.  So, that’s what happened.  We both had the special.  Chicken, Broccoli and cheddar skillet.  It was served over hashbrowns (and I really like their hashbrowns) with pieces of white meat chicken, pretty good sized crowns of broccoli in a cheddar cheese sauce.  Though I ordered it, I didn’t have high expectations for it.  But because Steve ordered one, I decided I wanted to try one.  Oh, the skillet bake had ritz cracker crumbs on top.  Steve wasn’t sure if he’d like that but he did.  Steve really enjoyed it though for me, I was just content that it didn’t suck completely.  It looks deceiving.  At first Steve thought it wasn’t going to be enough for him but we both got stuffed.

As a starter, I had a little salad of iceberg lettuce, red onions, grated carrots, tomato pieces with italian dressing.  Steve skipped the salad because they ran out of blue cheese dressing.  He took it as a sign that he should order sides instead.  So he got a thing of macaroni and cheese that he really likes and another side of country style green beans.  I’ve had their mac n cheese before and it’s okay.  It’s in a sauce and doesn’t look baked at all.  I don’t love it but it’s different from what I’d make at home.  The green beans were good.  It had a smokey ham flavor and they were very tender and dark in color.  I enjoyed them more than Steve but I couldn’t finish the whole serving because it got to be a bit much.  They served biscuits and corn bread with butter as well.  I like their biscuits although I didn’t finish mine.  I took one bite of their nice n’ grainy corn bread and that was it for me.  The main course and all the breads really filled me up.  It sat in me like a rock but it didn’t make me feel weighed down.  I washed all this down with a nice, refreshing diet coke and Steve had the raspberry ice tea.

We considered getting a short stack for dessert (I love their pancakes) but we passed cause we were so stuffed.  Besides, Steve made brownies from a box the other night and I had just picked up Haagan Daaz vanilla swiss almond ice cream that I’d accidentally left in the refrigerator and not the freezer.  Steve found it and said I wasn’t allowed to buy ice cream anymore.

Give yourself a break and grab a bite to eat and as always, Eat Something Good!

We used to have a Cracker Barrel Restaurant about a half mile from our house. Their food was okay, but it wasn’t anything special.

It really struck me funny when I read that you accidentally put the ice cream in the refrigerator. I think melted ice cream would make a great sauce to pour over brownies.

  • Yeah, I like cracker barrel breakfasts. And about the brownies and ice cream. So good. It made us happy last night.

  • I ate at Cracker Barrel once, they have some really good fried okras and strawberry lemonade! Glad you enjoyed it!

  • Desmone - I’ll have to try both! I’m sure they’ll be a return trip.
