Evan Grocery & Deli
For some reason Steve & I always find a reason to visit Yonkers NY. Whether we’re seeing some sites, shopping, visiting with friends or eating at a diner, we’re there on a regular basis. During one of our trips, we discovered a cute little grocery & deli. You can’t help but smile when you look at the storefront. It’s painted in such cheerful colors.
One of the owners, Jackie, greets you with a smile and continues to smile while you’re there devouring one of her hot sandwich creations. She makes you feel at ease and really knows a lot about food. When she first opened she tried to market her place as a healthy kind of establishment with organic products. Unfortunately the neighborhood wasn’t quite ready for it. Currently, she has an eclectic mix of beverages and products and the tiniest bottles of all kinds of juice.
There’s a definite Latin influence to her menu. Two of my favorite sandwiches there are the cubano and the Philly cheese steak. The cubano is made of pork shank, ham, swiss, pickles, mustard, mayo & mojito (garlic, cilantro & olive oil combo) on water bread - it tasted sort of like portuguese rolls with very little salt. And the Philly Cheese Steak with grilled onions, provolone and a little garlic oil. They are both served hot and fresh off the grill (or is it griddle) that sits right behind the counter. She even warms up the bread somehow. Oh, and the wedge breads she gets are really good. They’re nice and medium brown on the outside without too much dough or doughiness on the inside. And another thing. Dessert. She’s got something called Tres Leche. It’s a cake soaked in three different types of milk. I usually go for a chocolatey dessert but this one satisfied me. I’m also interested in trying her flan.
We’ll definitely keep going there. If you’re in the area, get there before 2pm on weekdays cause that’s when the grill closes. As for me, I’ve already got my eye on the next sandwich. Til then guys, Eat Something Good!
